SPRING SUMMER 2024 DEPARTURE
"My grandmother, like grandmothers are to everyone, was an extraordinary woman. I am the only one who can remember her now. Once I'm gone, her existence will be completely lost.
The theme of my work is how each individual's importance differs. You are an incredibly important person, and so am I. My grandmother, as well as everyone else, is also an immensely important person. Each one of us is unique and different from others. But we are forgotten within three generations. (Omission)

One of the works by Christian Boltanski, a French contemporary artist, is called "Last Second," which features a counter that displays every moment of the artist's life in seconds and stops at the moment of death. When I saw this work in 2019, the count was still moving, indicating the artist's continued existence. However, now I imagine that it has become a static piece, frozen at a certain point in time. Since Boltanski's passing in 2021, I haven't seen the stopped "Last Second." Yet, I reflect on its existence and perceive this work as a device that evokes memories, thoughts about the afterlife, and prayers.
Last year, I experienced farewells with people who had a significant impact on me, leading me to contemplate the concept of death and my own views on life and death. In the 2024 Spring/Summer Collection, "Departure," I transformed those memories and emotions into positive expressions, using the imagery of fantastical light textures to depict a bright and beautiful imaginary world. Drawing inspiration from Boltanski as an homage and personal memories, I developed images of "Lights," "Anonymous Deceased," "Ruri Blue," and "Ghosts," connecting them to the memories while transcending into a wardrobe that allows us to live in the present world positively.
「私の祖母は、誰にとっても祖母という存在はそうだと思いますが、それは素晴らしい女性でした。彼女のことを思い出すことができるのは、今となっては私しかいません。私が死んだら、彼女の存在は完全に失われます。
私の仕事の題材は、一人一人の人間の重要さに如何に違いがあるかということです。あなたはとても重要な人物で、私もとても重要な人物で、私の祖母も、誰も彼もとても重要な人物です。誰もが唯一で、他の人とは異なっている。でも、三世代で忘却されるのです。（中略）
文明は人類が死者を埋葬するようになって始まったと言われています。私は埋葬者です。死者のためのセレモニーを司るのが私の仕事です。」

フランスの現代芸術家クリスチャン・ボルタンスキーの作品のひとつに、『最後の時』と名付けられた、作者が生きた全ての時間を秒単位で示し、死の瞬間に停止するカウンターがあります。私が2019年にこの作品を目にした時点では、カウントが動き続いて作者の生存を知らしめる作品でしたが、現在ではある時点での数字を示したまま停止した静的な作品と化しているのだろうと、その様子を思うことがあります。2021年のボルタンスキーの死後、停止した『最後の時』を私は見ていません。しかしその存在を思い返し、それにまつわる記憶、死後の世界や祈りを想起させる装置としてこの作品の完結を感じます。
昨年、私自身に大きく影響を与えてくれた人々との別れを経験し、死の概念そのものや自分の死生観を考える時間が続きました。2024年春夏コレクション『Departure』ではその記憶や想いをエネルギーに変えた前向きな表現として、また私の個人的な追悼の意を込めた表現として、幻想的な光のテクスチャーを用いて明るく美しいイマジナリーな世界のイメージを描いています。ボルタンスキーへのオマージュと個人的な思い出から連想した「光」「匿名の死者」「瑠璃色」そして「亡霊」のイメージを展開し、彼らとの記憶を繋ぎながら現世をポジティブに生きるためのワードローブへと昇華させました。
