The Wizard of Oz (1939) Synopsis

“Dorothy Gale, a girl living in Kansas, dreams of a better place somewhere over the rainbow.

One day, a tornado suddenly carries her and her dog Toto to the Land of Oz.

When she arrives, she accidentally defeats the Wicked Witch of the East and begins wearing the magical shoes left at her feet.

The Good Witch of the North appears and listens to Dorothy’s wish to return home. She tells Dorothy that if she follows the Yellow Brick Road to Emerald City and meets the great Wizard of Oz, he may help her return to Kansas.

Dorothy begins her journey to meet the Wizard.

Along the way, she meets a Scarecrow who believes he has no brain, a Tin Man who believes he has no heart, and a Cowardly Lion who feels he has no courage. Each of them joins the journey, hoping to receive what they think they are missing from the Wizard.

After overcoming many trials set by the Wicked Witch of the West, who wants Dorothy’s magical shoes, they finally reach the Wizard. However, he is not a powerful magician but an ordinary human who, like Dorothy, was once brought to Oz from Kansas. Even so, the Wizard formally recognizes what they have already shown through their actions. He gives the Scarecrow a diploma as proof of intelligence, presents the Tin Man with a heart-shaped clock as a token, and awards the Lion a medal as proof of courage.

Later, the Good Witch of the North appears again and tells Dorothy that she has always had the power to return home through the magical shoes she has been wearing. Dorothy realizes that she already had both the power to return and the most important thing of all, “There’s no place like home.” Using the power of the shoes, she returns from the Land of Oz to her house in Kansas.”

Immediately after presenting my previous collection, I experienced a period of mental difficulty and began treatment.

During that time, my motivation weakened, and clear ideas became increasingly hard to reach. Still, I continued searching for a new form of expression.

While struggling with the collection, I received these words: “Even if you could not reach something completely new, continuing the clothing you had created so far would already be original and meaningful.”

This recognition became a turning point. Instead of chasing something entirely new, I decided to focus again on what TSTS has already created and what has always been there.

The saxe blue gingham check has appeared in every TSTS season since the debut collection.

At once childlike and sophisticated, feminine yet occasionally masculine, it holds a gentle sweetness alongside a cool, restrained sensuality. It is a pattern that continues to express the duality at the core of TSTS.

For this collection, I refocused on the saxe blue gingham check, layering it with Dorothy’s gingham dress from The Wizard of Oz, to create a collection that looks inward at what has always been there.

“THE SAXE BLUE GINGHAM” introduces no new inventions.

Instead, elements such as gingham checks, bonding, scalloped cutting, and emoji-like graphics, all of which have been used before, are slightly updated and presented again. This collection became a way to rediscover what I believed I had lost, and to reaffirm what has always been there, my own version of a place to return to, much like the journey in The Wizard of Oz.

「オズの魔法使(The Wizard of Oz, 1939)」あらすじ

“カンザスに暮らす少女ドロシー・ゲイルは、「虹の彼方のどこかに（Somewhere Over The Rainbow）」よりよい場所があると夢見ていました。

彼女は竜巻によって、愛犬トトとともに突如オズの国へと飛ばされます。

到着した先で、ドロシーは偶然にも東の悪い魔女を倒してしまい、その足元に残された魔法の靴を身につけることになります。

そこに現れた北の良い魔女は、元の世界へ帰りたいというドロシーの願いを聞き入れ、「黄色い煉瓦の道をたどってエメラルド・シティに行き、偉大なる『オズの魔法使』に会えば、カンザスへ戻してくれるだろう」とドロシーに助言します。

ドロシーは元の世界へ帰るため、エメラルド・シティにいる『オズの魔法使』を訪ねる旅に出ます。

旅の途中でドロシーは、自分には脳がないと悩む案山子、自分には心がないと嘆くブリキ男、自分には勇気がないと泣く臆病なライオンと出会い、それぞれが自分に欠けているものを与えてもらうため、『オズの魔法使』を目指す旅に同行します。

ドロシーの魔法の靴を狙う、西の悪い魔女が仕掛ける数々の試練を乗り越え、ついに彼らは『オズの魔法使』の元へ辿り着きます。しかし彼の正体は偉大なる魔法使いなどではなく、ドロシーと同様にカンザスからオズの国に飛ばされてきた、ただの人間でした。

それでも『オズの魔法使』は、魔法に頼らずとも彼らが旅の中で示した行動を正式に承認するため、案山子には知性の証として博士号の「卒業証書」を、ブリキ男には心を象徴する感謝の品として「ハート型の時計」を、ライオンには勇気の証として「勲章」を与えます。

その後、再び北の良い魔女があらわれ、ドロシーが旅のはじめから身につけていた魔法の靴の力を使えば、家へ帰ることができるのだと告げます。ドロシーは、家へ帰るための力と、「何よりも大切な、帰るべき家（There's no place like home）」を最初から自分自身が持っていたことを知り、魔法の靴の力でオズの世界からカンザスの家へと帰りました。”

私は前回のコレクションを発表した直後に抑うつ状態になり、治療を開始しました。

意欲や思考力が鈍り、考え続けても新しいアイディアが生まれない苦しい時間が続きましたが、それでもなんとか、新しい表現をしようと模索していました。

制作が進められず悩んでいる最中に、「たとえ今回、新しい表現に辿り着けなかったとしても、これまで積み重ねてきた服作りを継続すること自体が、すでに十分にオリジナルであり、価値を持っている」という言葉を受け取ることがありました。

この、これまでの表現を「承認」される言葉がきっかけとなり、今回は未だ見ぬ新しいものづくりを目指すのではなく、TSTSが既に作ってきたもの、既に持っているものに改めて焦点を当てるコレクションを作ることを決めました。

TSTSがデビューコレクションから全てのシーズンで作り続けているモチーフに、サックスブルーのギンガムチェックがあります。どこか子供らしくもありながら、上品で大人らしくもある。女性的でもありながら、時に男性的でもある。優しく可愛らしさもありながら、知的で冷たい色気のあるモチーフでもある、TSTSのコンセプト「二面性」を体現するような、ずっと好きな色柄です。

そこで今回は、このサックスブルーのギンガムチェックに改めて焦点を当て、また映画『オズの魔法使』でドロシーが身につけているギンガムチェックのワンピースのイメージを重ね合わせて、自分の中に既にあるものを見つめ直すためのコレクションを作りました。

“THE SAXE BLUE GINGHAM”には、新たな発明はありません。

むしろ、ギンガムチェックやボンディング、スカラップカッティングや絵文字風のグラフィックなど、これまで既に表現してきたものを少しずつ更新し、改めて提案しています。これは自分には何もないと思っていた私が、本当は既に持っていたもの、そして私にとっての「帰るべき家」を再確認するための、『オズの魔法使』の旅のような行為でもありました。
