AUTUMN WINTER 2024 SAMPLES 2

"SAMPLES 2" is a collection that attempts a renewed expression of the same concept, revisiting my graduation collection "SAMPLES," which I presented at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in 2016. This reinterpretation comes from the perspective of the journey that led me to become "TSTS" over seven years.

The original "SAMPLES," presented in 2016, was a collection exploring the duality of human nature. As an icon representing this duality, I symbolically embraced the concept of "tension and relaxation" and the multifaceted comedian and filmmaker, "Beat Takeshi / Takeshi Kitano." By juxtaposing elements such as masculine tailoring and workwear with humorous underwear, playful patterns, and feminine textures, the collection aimed to harmonize Tokyo streetwear with Antwerp conceptual and surreal vibes.

For me, "SAMPLES" was the last collection of my student life and a pivotal moment that defined my style as a designer. The surreal worldview conveyed through the concepts of "duality" and "tension and relaxation" has been inherited and continues to shape the brand concept of TSTS: Takuya Sasaki Test Samples.

During the development of "SAMPLES 2," I was greatly influenced by the David Hockney exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. Witnessing Hockney's recent works created with the iPad as his chosen medium, including time-lapse videos capturing his brushstrokes and oversized pieces printed on paper exceeding 90 meters, I felt a strong connection. Inspired by the possibilities of creating art "on a digital medium (yet with an analog feel)," I promptly acquired my first iPad from the Apple store on my way back from the exhibition. Even the research book, traditionally crafted with paper, colored pencils, scissors, and glue, saw a transformation this season with every page created as digital data on the iPad.

In the "SAMPLES 2" collection, while retaining elements such as the contrast between masculinity and humor and the use of playful patterns from "SAMPLES," I introduced a fresh perspective with iPad drawings, playful graphic senses, a sense of freedom in collage, and the concrete image of "2". Through these additions, the core concept of TSTS, the theme of "duality," is redefined and reintroduced.

「SAMPLES 2」とは、私が2016年にアントワープ王立芸術アカデミーで発表した修了コレクション「SAMPLES」を、発表から7年以上の時を経て「TSTS」となった視点で、改めて全く同じコンセプトでの再表現を試みたコレクションです。

2016年に発表した「SAMPLES」とは、人間の二面性についてのコレクションです。

「二面性」を表現するアイコンとして「緊張と緩和」の概念と、お笑い芸人であり映画監督でもある「ビートたけし/北野武」をシンボリックに掲げました。緊張感のあるテーラードやワークウェアなどのマスキュリンなスタイルに対し、アンダーウェアやポップな柄、フェミニンな素材感などユーモラスな要素を衝突させることで、東京的なリアルクローズとアントワープ的なコンセプチュアルでシュールなムードが調和する世界観を表現しました。

「SAMPLES」は私にとって学生生活最後のコレクションであり、デザイナーとしての作風を決定づけた非常に重要なコレクションです。

そして「SAMPLES」で掲げた「二面性」や「緊張と緩和」のコンセプトによるシュールな世界観は、TSTS：Takuya Sasaki Test Samplesのブランドコンセプトとして現在まで継承されています。

今回「SAMPLES 2」のディベロップを進める最中、東京都現代美術館で行われたデイヴィッド・ホックニー展で、近年ホックニーが自身の新たな画材として選んだiPadでのペインティング作品群を見て、強く影響を受けました。

iPadドローイングアプリのタイムラプス機能でホックニーの筆跡を辿る映像作品や、90m超の紙へと出力した超大型作品など、デジタルデータの特性を最大限に活かしたアウトプットから「デジタル画面上で（あるにも関わらずアナログに）絵を描くことの可能性」を感じ、私は帰りにその足でApple storeに向かい人生初のiPadを手に入れていました。

これまで紙と色鉛筆と鋏と糊で作っていたリサーチブックも、今シーズンは全てのページをiPadでデジタルデータとして作成しました。

「SAMPLES 2」コレクションでは、「SAMPLES」で用いたマスキュリニティとユーモアを対比する手法やポップな柄使いなどの要素はそのまま継承しながら、新たにiPadドローイングによるプレイフルなグラフィック感覚やコラージュ感覚、また具体化した「2」のイメージを取り入れることで、TSTSの主題である「二面性」のコンセプトそのものを更新し再提起しています。
