AUTUMN WINTER 2023 TSTS PROPAGANDA

Takuya Sasaki and Yurie Isashi have cultivated TSTS's unique worldview through their experiences in fashion from both Japan and Europe, including their time at Bunka Fashion College and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

At the core of TSTS's expression lies a duality that encompasses the values of real clothes influenced by Japan's fashion magazine and street snap cultures, alongside the conceptual and surreal atmosphere infused with Belgian wit.

For their debut collection, "TSTS PROPAGANDA," they adopted the themes of Charlie Chaplin and Tension and Release¹, presenting a collection that is both pop in aesthetic and socially critical in message.

In 1940, Charlie Chaplin released the film The Great Dictator, in which he addressed the society of his time during World War II with humor and satire.

Until this film, Chaplin had been committed to producing silent films, believing it essential to preserve the artistic integrity of cinema. However, this work marked a turning point: in his first sound film, he delivered an improvised speech known as "The Final Speech," where he passionately spoke out against war, racial discrimination, and dictatorship. Chaplin would later describe the film as “a propaganda for democracy.”

With this collection, TSTS pays tribute to Chaplin’s strength as a creator who fearlessly expressed his beliefs to the world, as well as to his sense of humor as a comedian. Their aim is to reflect this balance—the world of tension and release—through clothing.

The lineup includes striking all-over prints featuring Chaplin graphics, developed in official collaboration with the Chaplin estate. Furthermore, the collection plays with surreal visual language and duality through gingham checks and stripes that shift between front/back and inside/outside. It presents both structured, masculine pieces—like blazers, slacks, and Crombie coats—and voluminous, relaxed silhouettes that recall the playful proportions of children’s wear. Together, these elements create a rhythm of tension and release.

Every piece in the collection is stamped with its “Date of Completion,” as an homage to the conceptual artists who influenced TSTS, particularly those who explored time as a medium. It also serves as proof that no two pieces are exactly the same, and each one exists as a truly unique object in the world.

¹ “Tension and Release” is a concept often found in Japanese comedy, where laughter is created by building up tension and then suddenly releasing it.

佐々木拓也と井指友里恵は、文化服装学院やアントワープ王立芸術アカデミーをはじめ日本とヨーロッパそれぞれの服作りと、それを形成する環境・文化・技法、そして哲学に触れるなかで、TSTS独自の世界観を形成させていきました。

日本の雑誌やストリートスナップ文化に影響されたリアルクローズの価値観、またベルギーのウィットを含んだコンセプチュアルでシュールなアーティスティックな空気感、そしてこの両者を内包する『二面性』をTSTSの表現の根幹としています。

デビューコレクションとなる『TSTS PROPAGANDA』では「緊張と緩和」及び「チャーリー・チャップリン」をテーマに掲げ、ポップながら社会批評的ステートメントをもったコレクションを発表しました。

チャーリー・チャップリンは1941年、第二次世界大戦下の社会をユーモアと皮肉を交えながら訴えた映画『独裁者』を公開しました。本作まで「映画の芸術性を保つため」という理由でサイレント映画の製作に拘り続けてきたチャップリンでしたが、自身初のトーキー映画への挑戦としたこの作品において、彼は”The Final Speech”と呼ばれる6分強のアドリブでの演説シーンを残しました。この演説で戦争反対、人種差別批判、そして独裁政治への強烈な批判を訴え、後にチャップリン自身は本作を「民主主義のプロパガンダ」と称しました。

今回のコレクションでは彼の、信念やステートメントをリスクを恐れず世界に訴えるクリエイターとしての強さへの敬意と、また一方でコメディアンとしてユーモアを調和させるセンス：「緊張と緩和」の世界観を表現しようと試みました。

アイテムラインナップにおいて、チャーリー・チャップリンとオフィシャルコラボレーションしたチャップリン柄による強烈な存在感のプリントアイテムをはじめ、前/後、内/外、表/裏で表情を変化させたギンガムチェックやボーダーによって、シュールなグラフィック感覚や二面性を表しています。またウェルメイドなブレザーやスラックス、クロンビーコートに代表されるマスキュリンで緊張感のあるアイテムと、ボリューミーでどこか子供服を連想させるようなオーバーサイズやリラックスしたアイテムを同時に存在させることで、緊張と緩和のイメージを連想させています。全てのアイテムには「商品の完成日」がスタンプされており、これはTSTSに影響を与えたコンセプチュアルアーティストたちが多く用いた時間表現へのオマージュであり、また同じ商品が世界に二つと無いユニークなものであることを証明しています。
